Outstanding Achievement in Volunteer Management

The “Outstanding Achievement in Volunteer Management” award goes to a volunteer manager who has demonstrated excellence in running a volunteer program.  This provides executive directors the unique opportunity to do something great for a hard-working and committed volunteer manager.  It also reinforces the professionalism and expertise that so many volunteer managers possess but are rarely recognized for.  The award will be presented at DOVIA’s annual meeting in November.

Karen Paterson Scholarship

Karen Paterson was a very special woman and a leader in our field. She exemplified the best and the brightest in nonprofit management. Karen worked at Safehouse in Boulder, Project Angel Heart and the Denver Mental Health Corporation as the Volunteer Manager. During these years Karen also earned her masters degree in Nonprofit Management from Regis University where she was honored with a Graduate level award in her name: The Karen A. Patterson Award for Community/ Organizational Change. Karen was very involved with her professional community serving on the board of Denver DOVIA and doing her masters thesis project with the International Association of Volunteer Administration. Karen accomplished all of this before she was 35. It is amazing what an incredible impact Karen had and continues to have on her community. It is something for us all to aspire to.

We honor Karen not for what she did but for who she was; she was a great collaborator, she was the best networker I ever met, and she understood the value of mentorship, both giving and receiving. And most importantly at the end of her life she lived the Seize-the- Day principle, living every day to the fullest. These are important qualities for a professional in our field.  It is Karen’s honor that DOVIA has created the Karen Patterson scholarship for selected recipients who will, through the largess of this organization, learn the principles of volunteer management -that Karen held near and dear.

Life Time Achievement Awards
Marlene Wilson and Ivan Scheier

In celebration of

Denver DOVIA's 25th Anniversary on

 October 24, 1997,

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT awards were presented to:

 IVAN SCHEIER
Ivan Scheier, PhD is known for his professional on-site consulting for volunteer programs and citizen participation efforts in the US and Canada since 1967. This includes involvement in over 100 publications including a dozen books on volunteering; serving on commissions for the White House Conference on Children and Youth, the National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals and the National Forum on Volunteerism. This is only a small list of the many accomplishments and honors Ivan has received. He also served as the Director of Voluntas: The Center for Creative Community, headquartered in Madrid, New Mexico.

Ivan is known as the grandfather to organizations known as DOVIA's, "DOV's" " Associations," " Councils," or "Clusters." Nearly all exist to enhance the profession of volunteer management and to network with others. It was Ivan, who introduced us to the role of the "Dream Catcher."

MARLENE WILSON
Marlene Wilson is internationally know as one of the foremost authorities and dynamic trainers in the field of volunteer management. Since 1972, more than 150,000 people from volunteer organizations and churches have attended her workshops in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

Her methods are based on many years of experience in the public and private sectors, as well as the church arena. Marlene worked in human resources management for six years. When she later became director of a Volunteer Center, she applied her corporate experience to organizing volunteer programs. Since 1975, Marlene has served as president of her own publishing and consulting firm, Volunteer Management Associates.

Both Ivan Scheier and Marlene Wilson founded the Volunteer Program at Colorado University in Boulder in 1972. The program has trained several thousand volunteer directors throughout its' 25 years. Marlene served as the spark and faculty director with Ivan providing training through most of its remarkable existence. When discussions began about creating a volunteer management association in the Denver area, Marlene and Ivan provided their expertise in helping in the formation of the organization we now know as Denver DOVIA.
